A father arrived at a northwest Houston apartment Saturday evening to drop off diapers for his infant child, and within minutes an argument with the baby's mother turned into gunfire that left the infant's grandmother dead, the baby critically wounded, and the father dead by his own hand. Houston police said officers responded at approximately 7:35 p.m. to The Veranda at Centerfield apartments in the 7700 block of Willow Chase Boulevard after reports of a shooting.
According to houstonstringer.com, the father went to the apartment of the infant's 19-year-old mother to deliver diapers when an argument broke out between the two. The dispute escalated when the man pulled out a firearm, the outlet reported. He then shot the infant's grandmother, who was approximately 40 years old, in the back before shooting the baby in the abdomen.
The infant's mother rushed the child outside the apartment during the chaos and was not injured, per the same account. When officers arrived, they found the father already dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police performed CPR on the grandmother and applied a chest seal to her wound as they awaited medical help, according to the report.
Grandmother Pronounced Dead, Baby Remains Critical
Houston Fire Department crews transported the grandmother and the infant to an area hospital, where the grandmother was pronounced dead, the station notes. The infant was listed in critical condition as of early Sunday morning, according to police, as reported by Click2Houston. As of the latest reporting, Houston police had not released the identities of the victims or the suspect.
A Violent Night Against a Backdrop of Falling Crime
The shooting comes even as Houston's overall violent crime numbers have been trending sharply downward. The city recorded 95 homicides in the first half of 2026, down 38% from 154 during the same period in 2025, according to Axios Houston. Robberies fell nearly 27%, aggravated assaults dropped by more than 17%, and rape cases declined by about 20% over that same stretch, the outlet reported.
Earlier in the year, Houston Police Department data showed a 36.4% drop in homicides during the first quarter of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025, according to Houston Public Media. That outlet also reported that overall violent crime fell 18.9% from 2024 to 2025, with murders down 19% over the same span. Citywide, homicides across the cities tracked by the Major Cities Chiefs Association fell 17% through the first half of 2026, per Axios Houston.
No further details about the investigation into Saturday's shooting, including the relationship history between the father, the mother, and the grandmother, have been made public. Police have not said whether charges would have been pursued had the father survived.
