Florida Gulf Coast University is turning Veterans Day into a five-day affair this year, with a lineup of events running Nov. 9 through 13 that ranges from a military vehicle display to a dedicated basketball tribute. The university says the push is part of a broader effort to honor veterans, service members, military families and the wider military community on campus.
According to WGCU, FGCU will host a week of activities honoring veterans, service members, military families and the broader military community. The expanded format, dubbed Service & Sacrifice Week, comes as the university frames the commemorations around the nation's semiquincentennial, according to fgcu360.com, which reports the school is broadening its annual Veterans Day recognition beyond a single day this year.
A Week Built Around Military History and Stories
The week opens Monday, Nov. 9, with a Military Heritage & Vehicle Display running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Cohen Student Union, Room 214, per fgcu360.com's report. The outlet describes the week's programming as including displays of military artifacts and vehicles, veterans speaking about their service experiences, musical performances and informational tables set up across campus.
The next morning brings a more ceremonial tone. The Veterans Day flag-folding ceremony is set for Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 11 a.m. at the Veterans Pavilion, with FGCU President Aysegul Timur serving as guest speaker, the same report notes.
Basketball Salute and a Campus-Wide Expo
Midweek, the focus shifts to Alico Arena, where FGCU will hold Salute to Service Night at its women's basketball game Wednesday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m., according to WGCU's reporting. Then on Thursday, Nov. 12, the Military and Veterans Expo takes over the student union ballroom from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with fgcu360.com reporting the event will spotlight Navy and Coast Guard traditions and contributions.
The week closes Friday, Nov. 13 with a Grand Recognition Ceremony, though the exact schedule differs between sources. WGCU lists the ceremony as running from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., while fgcu360.com reports two separate presentations that day, one from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and a second from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Purple Heart Designation and Student Impact
Friday's program is also expected to include a formal step for the university's veteran identity. The same fgcu360.com report says the day will feature an official presentation and proclamation by the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 696, representing Lee, Hendry and Collier Counties, designating FGCU as a Purple Heart University.
The week's events arrive as FGCU's Office of Military & Veteran's Success continues to serve a sizable population on campus. The office served 509 military-connected students and families using Veterans Affairs education benefits during the 2025-26 academic year, fgcu360.com reports, underscoring the scale of the community the new week-long format is designed to recognize.
