Five people were injured, one with life-threatening wounds, in a crash at Albemarle Road and W.T. Harris Boulevard late Saturday night in east Charlotte. The collision happened just before midnight, sending two people to the hospital with serious injuries and two others with minor injuries, while one person was transported with life-threatening injuries.

The cause was unknown. Outbound Albemarle Road traffic was diverted around the scene around midnight, and the outbound lanes were closed, according to WCNC.

A Known Trouble Spot for Charlotte Drivers

The intersection where Saturday's crash happened has a well-documented history of wrecks. Albemarle Road and W.T. Harris Boulevard logged 49 crashes in 2024, tying it for fourth among Charlotte's most dangerous intersections, according to wsoctv.com. That reporting noted the intersection is one of five included in the city's 30-year plan for road upgrades aimed at addressing high-crash corridors across Charlotte.

Separately, a city project description on file with the City of Charlotte outlines pedestrian-safety and connectivity improvements planned for the Albemarle Road corridor between Redman Road and W.T. Harris Boulevard. That planning document does not speak to Saturday's crash specifically, and it remains unclear what role, if any, intersection design played in this latest incident, which is still under investigation.

Corridor Has Seen Other Serious Wrecks

Saturday's crash is not an isolated event along this stretch of east Charlotte roadway, though it is a distinct incident from earlier ones reported nearby. In May, officers responded around 2:30 a.m. to a fatal crash near the 9400 block of East W.T. Harris Boulevard, according to qcnews.com. Police said a Volkswagen Passat traveling north veered into oncoming traffic and struck a southbound Infiniti Q50; the Volkswagen's driver, identified as 33-year-old Luis Vazquez Reyes, later died from his injuries.

Another crash in the 9500 block of Albemarle Road near a Home Depot left one person with life-threatening injuries and another with minor injuries, the outlet reported. CMPD closed both sides of Albemarle Road following that Friday-afternoon wreck, and the roadway was fully reopened by 7:30 p.m. A separate fatal crash was also investigated near the 7100 block of East W.T. Harris Boulevard in the Hickory Grove Division, according to a CMPD newsroom notice.

As of Sunday, CMPD had not released further details on the cause of Saturday night's crash or the number of vehicles involved. The investigation remained active, and no additional updates on the conditions of those hurt had been made public.
