A husband’s desperate plea sent two Fredericksburg police officers running into a smoke-filled home on Hillcrest Drive on Tuesday, Nov. 3, after an emergency call warned that his wife was still trapped inside. Officers Smith and Lawrence found her in the kitchen and pulled her to safety, and both were later treated for smoke inhalation themselves.

Call Came In As Flames Spread Through the Home

The rescue unfolded after officers rushed into a burning home in the 200 block of Hillcrest Drive after an emergency call alerted authorities that a woman was still trapped inside, according to Daily Voice. Body-worn camera footage released by police shows a man at the scene directing the officers toward his wife. “Right there in the kitchen,” the man tells them, pointing the way through the smoke, the outlet reported.

Officer Dylan Smith located the woman inside the smoky home and asked her to give him her hand so he could pull her out, according to WUSA9. Smith called for Officer Lawrence to help him, and the two officers pulled the woman safely out of the home before Smith shouted that he was coming out himself, per the station’s report.

Woman and Another Man Rushed to the Hospital

Once outside, the woman and another man were treated at the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital, the same account from Daily Voice notes. Both officers were also treated for smoke inhalation after bringing the woman out of the burning structure.

Fire crews brought the blaze under control, and WUSA9 reported that the rescue resulted in no reported serious injuries. Still, as of the Nov. 4 report, the cause of the fire and the conditions of the two residents remained under investigation, according to the earlier Daily Voice account.

Department Praises Officers’ Swift Response

The Fredericksburg Police Department released the body-worn camera video of the rescue and recognized Smith and Lawrence for their courage and quick actions. In a statement cited by WUSA9, the department said the officers’ efforts brought a resident to safety under extremely dangerous circumstances.
