Fog and mist greeted Austin early Monday, but the gray start will give way to a hot, mostly sunny afternoon before storms move in overnight. Temperatures near 68 degrees before dawn are expected to climb to about 86, making for one more summerlike day before a cold front changes the mood.
Low clouds and patchy fog may linger into midmorning, with skies improving around noon. The National Weather Service Austin-San Antonio office says southerly winds will run 5 to 10 mph, with gusts up to 25 mph, while rain chances stay minimal through the daytime hours.
Storms Arrive Late Monday Night
The forecast turns unsettled after midnight Monday, with an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms and roughly a quarter- to half-inch of rain possible. A line of storms is expected to push through the Austin area overnight and into Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
A few storms could become strong to severe, with damaging wind gusts and large hail the main concerns. The greatest severe-weather risk is expected north and west of Interstate 35, but Austin-area residents with late-night plans should keep alerts enabled and avoid treating the warm afternoon as a guarantee of a quiet evening.
Tuesday Brings A Cooler Reset
Showers and thunderstorms could continue into Tuesday morning before ending by around noon, followed by mostly sunny skies and a high near 77. Winds will turn west-northwest behind the front, and Tuesday night should be clear with a low around 55.
That cooler, drier pattern will settle in for the rest of the week. Wednesday is forecast to be sunny and near 78 degrees, Thursday should reach about 80 under mostly sunny skies, and Friday through Sunday will trend milder in the low to mid-70s with only slight rain chances.
