Louisville is waking to clear skies and temperatures near 37 degrees Saturday morning, but the calm start comes with frost and freeze concerns. Patchy frost and fog are possible through about 8 a.m., followed by sunshine and a high near 55.
Frost This Morning, Freeze Tonight
The National Weather Service in Louisville has a Frost Advisory in effect through 9 a.m. Saturday. A Freeze Warning begins at midnight Saturday night and lasts through 10 a.m. Sunday, with the Louisville forecast calling for a low around 33 and colder sheltered or rural spots potentially falling into the upper 20s.
Tender plants should be covered or moved indoors, and exposed outdoor plumbing may need protection. Winds will stay light, generally from the northwest Saturday, which should help frost linger in colder pockets before the sun takes over.
What the Freeze Means for Gardens
The forecast low alone does not establish how this event compares with Louisville’s typical last spring freeze dates or long-term temperature records. The National Weather Service Louisville cautions that its frost and freeze statistics are for central Louisville; rural areas can differ significantly, even within Jefferson County.
Plant sensitivity also varies. The University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment says tomatoes, peppers, squash and beans are very susceptible to frost and should be covered. Cauliflower and lettuce are hardier, but may not survive if temperatures fall into the 20s.
Sunny Weekend Gives Way To Warm Week
Saturday afternoon should be bright and cool, while Sunday brings more sunshine and a high near 59 after morning frost and patchy fog. Monday warms to about 63 under mostly sunny skies, followed by a notably mild Tuesday with a high near 68.
Rain Chances Return Midweek
Wednesday stays mostly sunny early with a slight chance of rain showers after 1 p.m. Shower chances rise to about 30% Wednesday night and Thursday, when the high should reach 56.
A slight chance of showers may linger before sunrise Friday, followed by mostly sunny skies and a cooler high near 49. For now, Louisville’s forecast offers a sharp temperature swing: frosty mornings this weekend, springlike afternoons early next week, and a cooler turn by Friday.
