Gulfshore Opera is launching its 13th season with Puccini's Madama Butterfly, staging the tragic tale of a young geisha and the American naval officer who betrays her across three Southwest Florida counties. The company's performance at Artis—Naples is already sold out, but tickets remain for stops in Punta Gorda and Fort Myers in the coming weeks.
The Naples performance happens next Saturday, November 14, at 7 p.m. at Hayes Hall inside Artis—Naples, located at 5833 Pelican Bay Boulevard, and features the Naples Philharmonic, according to seed facts drawn from reporting by Florida Weekly. Guest conductor Jorge Parodi, who serves as Gulfshore Opera's music director, will lead the Naples Philharmonic for that performance, according to Artis—Naples, and Parodi will conduct all three performances across the tour. The Naples Philharmonic itself was founded in 1982, per the venue's own listing.
Soprano Janet Todd will sing the lead role of Cio-Cio-San in all three productions, portraying a 15-year-old Japanese geisha who falls in love with American naval officer Lieutenant Pinkerton, played by Brendan Boyle. Boyle returns to Gulfshore Opera after what Gulfshore Opera describes as his stunning success as Don José in last season's Carmen. The story unfolds in early-20th-century Nagasaki, Japan, and follows Cio-Cio-San as she marries Pinkerton only to be abandoned and later devastated when he returns with an American wife, according to the Artis—Naples event description.
A Company Built From a $280,000 Startup
Gulfshore Opera was founded in 2014 by Steffanie Pearce, who serves as the company's founder and general director. Per Florida Weekly's reporting, the organization has grown from a $280,000 startup into what is now described as a $1.1 million institution. Gulfshore Opera says it is Florida's only touring opera company, staging grand opera consecutively in venues across Collier, Lee and Charlotte counties.
That touring model carries real logistical weight: Gulfshore Opera needs three days in a theater for its grand opera productions, coordinating orchestra, sets, costumes and chorus. The company schedules its season around venue availability at Artis—Naples and Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall. According to Florida Weekly, Artis—Naples was unavailable for Gulfshore Opera performances between December and April this season, a scheduling constraint that shaped when and where the Madama Butterfly run could happen. The company will also take a two-week hiatus over Thanksgiving to rehearse with the Florida Philharmonic ahead of its later stops.
Beyond ticket sales, the company has said that only 40% of its budget is covered by box-office revenue, according to Gulfshore Opera. The organization describes its broader mission as offering affordable and accessible concerts with classical vocalists alongside social-engagement initiatives and community events. In the three counties it serves, that has translated into a children's chorus, community costume sewing and dinners-and-a-show programming.
The Cast Behind Cio-Cio-San
Soprano Shengnan Yang makes her professional company debut in this production, singing the role of Suzuki, per Gulfshore Opera's artist materials. Tenor Taka Komagata plays Goro and has previously performed the same role in a Madama Butterfly production with Opera Grand Rapids. André Chiang plays Prince Yamadori in the Gulfshore Opera staging.
Director Josh Shaw, founding artistic director and CEO of Pacific Opera Project, was named one of Musical America's Top 30 Professionals of the Year in 2023. Over fifteen seasons, Shaw has directed and designed more than 65 productions at Pacific Opera Project. Of his approach to this opera, Shaw said, “Every time I do Butterfly, I just want it to be gorgeous, with images that match the beauty of the music.”
Shaw also described a previous bilingual Madama Butterfly production he created, in which an Australian-Filipino soprano lead learned to sing fluently in Japanese in just two weeks after stepping in as a replacement. “She was a replacement, and she did it in two weeks,” Shaw said, recalling the feat.
Where and When to See It
Madama Butterfly ranks among the world's top five most performed operas, and performances in this run will include surtitles for audience members who want them. After the sold-out Naples show, the production moves to the Charlotte Performing Arts Center at 701 Carmalita Street in Punta Gorda on December 3 at 7 p.m., featuring the Florida Philharmonic.
The tour then closes at Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall at 13350 FSW Parkway in Fort Myers on December 8 at 7 p.m., again with the Florida Philharmonic. Together, the three stops mark Gulfshore Opera's 13th season of bringing grand opera to Collier, Lee and Charlotte counties.
