Gunfire broke out in Bethlehem in the middle of the night Monday, sending police to the 300 block of South New Street where officers quickly cordoned off a neighborhood convenience store as they worked to figure out what happened. The shots were reported around 1:15 a.m., jolting a stretch of the city that sits just blocks from downtown Southside Bethlehem.
County dispatchers confirmed to WFMZ that they received reports of shots fired on the 300 block of South New Street around that time. Video captured at the scene showed officers stringing up crime tape at Taylor Family Fuel and Mini Mart, a sign that the shooting happened at or near the store itself.
What Remains Unknown
Despite the law enforcement presence, dispatchers told the station they could not confirm whether anyone had actually been struck by the gunfire. That leaves a key question hanging over the early-morning incident, with no information yet on injuries, a motive, or whether anyone has been identified as a suspect. The outlet said it had reached out to police for more details and plans to provide updates as more information becomes available.
No arrest, weapon recovery, or official police statement had been reported in connection with the South New Street incident as of Monday morning, according to the same report from the station.
A City Grappling With Repeated Gunfire
This is not the first time gunshots have rattled Bethlehem in recent months. Just two days earlier, on Oct. 30, police responding to the 1100 block of Maple Street found a 21-year-old man with a gunshot wound, according to lehighvalleylive.com. That man was taken to an area hospital with injuries believed to be life-threatening, and officers seized a .22-caliber handgun at the scene. A 15-year-old boy was later taken into custody in connection with that shooting, the outlet reported.
There is no evidence tying that Maple Street case to the South New Street gunfire reported Monday, and the two incidents are being treated separately. A third episode from earlier this year adds to the pattern: in July, shots were fired at a Bethlehem intersection, though no injuries were reported in that case either, per a separate WFMZ account.
Looking Back At Last November's Scare
Gunfire has also disrupted public gatherings in Bethlehem before. Last November, police searched for a man accused of firing multiple shots following a youth championship football game at Sell Field, with the incident beginning shortly before 4:30 p.m. near Rodgers and Lewis streets, the outlet's report on that case noted. Witnesses said an argument after the game preceded the gunfire, and the suspect fired a handgun into the air before fleeing in a black sedan with tinted windows.
No injuries were reported in that case, and investigators recovered nine spent 9mm shell casings at the scene, the same report said. As of noon the following day, no suspect was in custody, and investigators were reviewing surveillance footage, though it is not clear from available reporting whether that case was ever resolved.
For now, the overnight shooting near Taylor Family Fuel and Mini Mart remains an open investigation, with police yet to say publicly whether anyone was hurt or whether a suspect has been identified.
