A postal worker was robbed at gunpoint on Barrows Street in Providence, according to police, who said the suspect made off with mail before disappearing into the surrounding neighborhood. The victim was not injured, officials said, but the case remains unsolved as investigators continue working to track down whoever pulled the trigger-ready threat on a city mail carrier.
Armed Suspect Fled After Taking Mail
According to WJAR, Providence police said officers are investigating an armed robbery involving a postal worker, with the alleged incident occurring at 31 Barrows St. Police said a suspect armed with a firearm stole mail before fleeing the area, leaving behind few immediate details about who was responsible or where they went. Officials said the investigation remains ongoing.
The station's report notes that the victim was not injured in the incident, a small measure of relief in an encounter that could have turned far more dangerous.
A Pattern Playing Out Beyond Rhode Island
Armed confrontations with letter carriers have become a growing concern nationally. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service told a House subcommittee that it saw increases in letter-carrier robberies from 2020 through 2023, prompting the launch of Project Safe Delivery, a joint initiative meant to address the crimes. A related excerpt from the Government Accountability Office states that robbery cases increased nearly sevenfold from fiscal years 2019 through 2023, and that the GAO's review found these robberies generally targeted letter carriers and increasingly involved firearms, according to a GAO report.
Similar incidents have surfaced elsewhere in New England. In Billerica, Massachusetts, police investigated a case in which a U.S. Postal Service worker had an arrow key taken from them. Boston 25 News reported that the incident occurred around 4:25 p.m. at 5 Brick Kiln Road, when two men in a black Cadillac displayed a handgun and demanded the worker's arrow key in the facility parking lot before driving off toward Chelmsford Street. No injuries were reported in that case either, and Billerica police said they were investigating. The evidence reviewed does not establish any connection between the Billerica case and the Providence robbery on Barrows Street.
Not the First Threat to a Providence Carrier
This is not the first time a Providence postal worker has reported being threatened on the job. In a separate incident, police said officers responded to Bellevue Avenue on July 29 after a postal worker was threatened with a knife while confronting a porch pirate who had taken two delivered packages, per the same account from WJAR. That case, too, is distinct from Thursday's robbery, and the evidence does not tie the two together.
Providence police have not announced any arrests in connection with the Barrows Street robbery. The investigation remains ongoing, and anyone with information has not yet been given a specific way to come forward, according to the available reporting.
