A 25-year-old man was chased down and killed by gunmen early Sunday in Philadelphia's Cobbs Creek neighborhood, while a woman who was with him was shot in the leg and survived. The shooting happened just after 1:30 a.m. near 60th and Pine streets, with the man pursued roughly a block and a half to nearly two blocks before he collapsed.

Officers responding to the scene first found the wounded woman before learning there was a second victim, according to 6abc. They then located the man on the 5900 block of Osage Avenue, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene, while the woman was taken to the hospital and listed in stable condition.

Detectives say surveillance video appears to show the pair being chased by at least two shooters as the attack unfolded, per the same report. Inspector D.F. Pace said the male victim was pursued for roughly a block and a half to nearly two blocks, with the gunmen continuing to fire until he collapsed. No arrests have been announced, and police have not identified a motive.

A Neighborhood With a Violent Recent History

This is not the first deadly shooting to hit the stretch around 60th Street in Cobbs Creek. In March, two 24-year-old men, Naasir Boyd and Paul Cobb, were killed and three others wounded when a masked gunman in a white vehicle opened fire on a crowd on the 300 block of South 60th Street near Delancey Street, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. A 36-year-old man was shot in the stomach and critically wounded in that attack, while two other men were shot in the legs and stabilized. The Inquirer also noted that at least two other shootings had already struck the 300 block of South 60th Street in the year before that one, with both of those earlier victims surviving.

Other recent Cobbs Creek shootings have followed a similarly grim pattern. In a separate case, police searched for a suspect after a gunman fired nine shots and struck a 23-year-old man several times, killing him, 6abc reported. In another shooting in the neighborhood, a 20-year-old woman was killed while a 55-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man were hospitalized in stable condition, according to Audacy. Investigators in that case collected at least 27 spent shell casings from at least two guns, including a semiautomatic rifle.

How Cobbs Creek Fits Into the City's Bigger Picture

Cobbs Creek has consistently ranked among Philadelphia's hardest-hit neighborhoods for gun violence. The West Philadelphia neighborhood recorded 605 shootings between 2015 and 2024, the second-highest total of any neighborhood analyzed in that span, according to The Trace. Still, the neighborhood's annual shooting count fell from 78 in 2020 to 47 in 2024, mirroring a broader citywide decline that saw shootings drop from 2,269 in 2023 to 1,112 in 2024, per the same analysis.

That downward trend has also shown up in the city's homicide figures. Philadelphia logged 222 homicides in 2025, a 17% drop from 2024 and the lowest total recorded since 1966, according to the Pew Charitable Trusts. Homicides had already fallen 35% from 2023 to 2024, the steepest single-year decline in 60 years, a sharp reversal from 2021, when the city recorded 562 homicides in its deadliest year on record. Pew's research also found that from 2022 through 2024, 38% of the city's shooting incidents were concentrated in just 12 of Philadelphia's 159 neighborhoods, and that 92% of shooting victims citywide during that span were Black or Hispanic, 86% were male, and 88% were adults.

Despite that citywide progress, the overnight ambush shows how quickly violence can still erupt on a single block. Detectives have not said whether Sunday's attack was targeted, and as of publication, no arrests had been made public.
