Hanford police say a late-night call about unruly, possibly intoxicated people near Kaweah and Ivy streets ended with officers pulling a loaded Glock 17 handgun, fitted with an extended magazine, off a 20-year-old man who resisted as they tried to figure out what was bulging at his waistband. Joseph Isaiah King was booked into Kings County Jail after the Oct. 23 encounter, while two others who were briefly detained were released.
According to the Hanford Sentinel, the Hanford Police Department received the call at around 11:30 p.m., with callers describing unruly people who appeared to be under the influence in the area. Street Crimes Unit investigators responding to the scene located three people who allegedly were openly possessing alcoholic beverages, the paper reports.
Two of the three began walking away from investigators as they approached, while the third person complied with an officer’s commands, per the Sentinel’s account. All three were ultimately detained, and it was during that encounter that officers said they spotted a bulge near one subject’s waistband.
Resistance Led to Handcuffs and a Search
That subject was later identified as King, and police said he resisted as officers attempted to identify the item tucked at his waist. Officers then handcuffed and searched him, retrieving the black Glock 17 with the extended magazine, the Sentinel reported. A records check afterward showed that King was not the registered owner of the firearm, according to police.
The other two people who had been detained were released, while King was booked at Kings County Jail. The Sentinel’s reporting lists four Penal Code violations tied to the arrest: PC 25850(A), carrying a loaded firearm in public; PC 25850(C)(6), carrying a loaded firearm in public while not the registered owner; PC 25400(A)(2), carrying a concealed weapon on his person; and PC 32310(A), a large-capacity magazine charge.
Pattern of Extended-Magazine Seizures in Hanford
This is not the first time this year that Hanford police have reported recovering a firearm with an extended or high-capacity magazine during a stop. In March, officers reported finding a Glock-style firearm with a high-capacity magazine during a traffic stop, taking 60-year-old Andre Post into custody without incident, according to the Sentinel. In another case reported by KMPH, police investigating a domestic-violence report said they found a firearm with an extended magazine in a vehicle near a young child, leading to the arrest of 23-year-old Isaiah Alcala.
Hanford police have not provided additional detail on how the King case will proceed. No court docket, plea, or disposition information has been made available for this case.
