A man died early Saturday morning after being struck by a car near the intersection of Staples Mill Road and Bremner Boulevard in Henrico County's Brookland District, and investigators still don't know who he is. The driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with police, but more than a day later, the victim remains unidentified.
Officers arrived at the crash site at about 2:25 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31, according to WRIC. They found a man with obvious signs of trauma to his body and face, and he was pronounced dead at the scene, the station reported. The driver involved in the crash remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation, per the same account.
Henrico police are asking anyone who recognizes the man's description or has information about his identity to come forward. Police described him as being in his 20s or 30s and of Hispanic or Asian ethnicity.
What Police Know About the Victim
Investigators say the man had no identifying markings, such as tattoos, that might help establish who he was. He was wearing black pants, a blue collared polo shirt, a dark green Adidas hat, and black sneakers at the time of the crash, the station's report notes.
Henrico police have asked anyone with information about the man's identity to contact Crash Investigator T. Holmes at 804-501-5000. No other details about the vehicle or the circumstances leading up to the crash have been released.
A Familiar Stretch of Road
Saturday's crash is not the first fatal pedestrian collision along this corridor. Henrico police investigated another fatal auto-versus-pedestrian crash on Staples Mill Road on Jan. 29, 2024, the county's police department noted in a release at the time. The department's cold-case page also lists an earlier, unsolved hit-and-run in which a pedestrian walking on Staples Mill Road near Interstate 295 was struck by a vehicle traveling east, with the suspect vehicle never identified.
The stretch has drawn broader scrutiny in recent years. A Richmond Times-Dispatch report from 2024 noted that since 2020, at least four pedestrians had been killed on Staples Mill Road in Glen Allen alone. WTVR reported that 11 people had been killed while walking in Henrico so far in 2024. Henrico police also identified a person killed in a different fatal pedestrian crash at Staples Mill Road and Libbie Mill East Boulevard in May as 74-year-old Christopher L. Yates, of Henrico, according to a county release.
Henrico is also planning a $4.5 million pedestrian and bicycle safety project along the western portion of Staples Mill Road. The work, expected to begin in 2027, would add sidewalks, curb ramps, crosswalks and lighting at nine intersections. The county project is part of a broader effort to improve walking and biking access along the corridor; it does not establish that any planned improvements would have changed the circumstances of Saturday’s crash. The planned safety upgrades were described by Henrico officials in September.
Countywide, the trend on traffic deaths has moved in a more encouraging direction overall. Henrico County's own crime statistics show traffic fatalities decreased from 48 in 2024 to 33 in 2025. For now, though, Saturday's victim remains unnamed, and Henrico police are counting on the public to help close that gap.
The crash also comes amid a national toll that remains high: 7,080 pedestrians were killed in U.S. traffic crashes in 2024, with more than 71,000 injured, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports. NHTSA advises drivers to use extra caution at night, when pedestrians can be harder to see. The agency’s figures provide broader context for the risks faced by people walking, but do not indicate what caused this crash.
