A 71-year-old man died Tuesday, two days after a driver struck him and sped off without stopping near 12200 Hillcroft Avenue in Houston early Sunday morning. Houston police say the crash happened around 6:15 a.m. on November 1, and the driver has not been identified.

According to a City of Houston media release, an unknown vehicle struck the man in the 12200 block of Hillcroft Avenue, and the driver did not stop to render aid. Houston Fire Department paramedics rushed him to a nearby hospital in critical condition, but doctors were unable to save him. He was pronounced dead on November 3.

The man's identity has not been released. Per the release, notification to his family members was still pending through the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. Houston police describe the investigation as ongoing, with no further details yet made public about the driver, the vehicle, or exactly how the crash unfolded.

Police Seek Witnesses as Search Continues

Houston police are asking anyone with information about the crash to come forward. People can contact the HPD Hit and Run Unit at 713-247-4065, or speak anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS, the city's release states.

This is not the only deadly incident reported on Hillcroft Avenue in recent memory. In a separate case, ABC13 reported that police were searching for a man in his 20s after a driver struck and killed a pedestrian in the 6700 block of Hillcroft Avenue near Dashwood Drive, around 2 a.m. Officials in that case said the victim may have been in a crosswalk when a dark-colored Honda SUV bearing a New Jersey plate hit him. And in March, Houston police investigated a separate fatal crash at 3200 Hillcroft Avenue, in which an 18-year-old woman was killed; her identity, too, was pending family notification at the time, per the Houston Police Department.

A Deadly Pattern on Houston Streets

The Hillcroft Avenue death adds to a troubling tally of pedestrian fatalities across the city. Preliminary data compiled by Axios shows 300 people died in traffic crashes on Houston roadways in 2025, a total that included 99 pedestrians and 10 cyclists among 280 fatal crashes citywide. The outlet's reporting found that most of those crashes, 154 of them, happened on city-operated streets, while across all of Harris County, 517 people died in traffic crashes last year.

Houston's toll from the first half of 2025 alone was stark: 142 traffic deaths and 658 crashes that caused serious injury, according to preliminary state data cited by the same outlet. Of those 142 deaths, 53 were pedestrians and two were bicyclists. Figures for 2024 vary between Axios reports, with one putting the year's total traffic deaths at 317, including 119 pedestrians and eight cyclists, and a later report citing 341 total deaths for that year; the discrepancy between the two figures has not been resolved.

For now, the man killed on Hillcroft Avenue remains unidentified publicly, and the driver who left him in the roadway has not been found. Houston police say the investigation remains open as they continue working to track down the vehicle involved.
