A 55-year-old woman and a 66-year-old man were found shot to death inside a Harlem apartment Thursday evening, both with gunshot wounds to the head, and no firearm has turned up at the scene as investigators work to figure out exactly what happened behind closed doors near 2029 Second Avenue.

According to ABC7 New York, officers responded to a 911 call reporting a past assault at the address at approximately 8:34 p.m. Thursday. When they arrived, they discovered the two victims inside the apartment, both suffering from gunshot wounds to the head. EMS pronounced them dead at the scene, and as PIX11 reported, the discovery came Thursday evening in Manhattan, according to the NYPD.

Sources told ABC7 that the woman appeared to be the man's home health aide and was found inside his apartment, though neither victim has been publicly identified. Their names are being withheld pending family notification, ABC7 reported. With no weapon recovered, detectives are treating the case as a possible double homicide, ABC7 also reported.

No Arrests As Investigation Continues

No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing, the station reports. Police have not released a motive or described any suspects in connection with the shooting, and the circumstances that left two people dead inside the Second Avenue apartment remain unclear.

Gun Violence Has Rattled East Harlem Before

This is not the only recent case of deadly gun violence to hit East Harlem. In a separate shooting, an 18-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man were killed when gunfire erupted around 7:30 p.m. on a Sunday at Lexington Avenue and East 128th Street, according to CBS News New York. No arrests had been made in that case at the time of the station's report.

In another incident, 69-year-old Robin Wright was fatally struck by a stray bullet to the face while walking near East 110th Street and Madison Avenue at around 12:30 p.m. on a Wednesday afternoon, CBS News New York reported. Wright was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead; no arrests have been made in that shooting either, and the investigation remains ongoing.

For now, the deaths of the 55-year-old woman and 66-year-old man inside the Second Avenue apartment remain under active investigation, with police asking the public for any information that could help identify who was responsible.
