A 27-year-old Honduran man has been sentenced to 14 years in federal prison for leading a fentanyl trafficking conspiracy that funneled the drug into California, following his extradition from Honduras roughly two years ago. Abner Estrada Cruz was convicted of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute at least 400 grams of fentanyl, a case built through years of investigation and court proceedings against several co-defendants.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Eastern District of California, Estrada Cruz was sentenced to the 14-year term by U.S. District Judge Dale A. Drozd, according to Action News Now. The Justice Department's own statement notes only that the sentencing occurred on a Monday, without specifying the calendar date. Estrada Cruz had pleaded guilty to the charges on May 11, per Action News Now's reporting.

Court documents cited by Action News Now describe Estrada Cruz as the leader of a drug trafficking organization that operated out of Honduras, Oakland and Portland, Oregon. He is accused of coordinating the sale of 14 pounds of fentanyl powder into the Eastern District of California, working through at least seven intermediaries to move the drug, according to the same report.

Extradition From Honduras Set the Case in Motion

Estrada Cruz's prosecution hinged on his extradition from Honduras to the United States. The U.S. Department of Justice, Eastern District of California states that the extradition took place on January 24, 2025, bringing him to face the charges filed against him. That timeline places nearly two years between his arrival in U.S. custody and his eventual sentencing.

A federal docket reviewed on CourtListener identifies the underlying case as United States v. Arteaga Cruz, case number 2:24-cr-00246, filed in the Eastern District of California. The docket shows the case was built around an indictment returned on August 22, 2024, naming three other men, including Yahir Alexander Arteaga Cruz, in a separate indictment from Abner Estrada Cruz.

Three Co-Defendants Named in the Same Case

That August 2024 indictment, according to the CourtListener docket, charged Yahir Alexander Arteaga Cruz on counts 1 and 2 through 4, Carlos Samir Colindrez-Erazo on counts 1 and 5, and Aronis Jose Hernandez-Aguilar on counts 1 and 6. Per Action News Now's reporting, all three of those co-defendants have since pleaded guilty in related proceedings.

Colindrez-Erazo pleaded guilty on May 18 to conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute at least 400 grams of fentanyl and is scheduled to be sentenced on December 14, the outlet reports. Hernandez-Aguilar pleaded guilty on July 27 to distribution of at least 400 grams of fentanyl, with sentencing scheduled for January 25, 2027. Arteaga Cruz pleaded guilty on September 21 to conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute at least 400 grams of fentanyl, along with four counts of fentanyl distribution, and is scheduled to be sentenced on January 11, 2027.

Multiple Agencies Involved in the Investigation

The investigation into the trafficking network was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Homeland Security Investigations and the U.S. Marshals Service, according to Action News Now's account of the case. The Butte County Sheriff's Office and several other agencies also assisted in the probe, the outlet reports.

The case has been described as part of a broader Homeland Security Task Force initiative, which Action News Now reports was established by Executive Order 14159. The task force is characterized as a partnership aimed at eliminating criminal cartels, foreign gangs, transnational criminal organizations, and human smuggling and trafficking rings operating in the United States and abroad.
