Houston will honor those who served with its annual Houston Salutes American Heroes Veterans Day Celebration on Wednesday, Nov. 11, kicking off with a ceremony at City Hall before a parade winds through downtown streets. The daylong tribute is free and open to the public, drawing veterans, families and civic leaders to the steps of City Hall before the procession rolls past onlookers downtown.
According to ABC13 Houston, the Veterans Day ceremony begins at 10 a.m. and recognizes local heroes on the steps of City Hall. A moment of silence follows at 11 a.m., commemorating the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I, and the American Heroes Parade steps off at 11:30 a.m.
The ceremony's keynote speaker is listed differently across sources. The station's report names Ambassador Chase Untermeyer, a Navy veteran, as this year's keynote speaker, while a City of Houston web page names retired U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Major Angela Maness as the keynote speaker, without confirming that reference applies to the 2026 event.
Parade Route Through Downtown Houston
The American Heroes Parade starts at Dallas and Bagby and proceeds east on Dallas, north on Louisiana, west on Walker, south on Smith and west on Lamar, ending at Lamar and Bagby, per the same account. The parade takes place in downtown Houston and highlights local veteran organizations, ROTC programs, bands, supporters and others. ABC13 plans to stream the parade live at 11:30 a.m.
That route mirrors the path Houston's parade took in 2025, when it also went east on Dallas, north on Louisiana, west on Walker, south on Smith and west on Lamar before ending on Lamar at Bagby, as ABC13's coverage of last year's event detailed. That earlier celebration also opened with a 10 a.m. ceremony and its own moment of silence for the Armistice.
Street Closures Begin a Day Early
Drivers downtown should expect disruptions starting the day before the parade. Additional curb lane closures for setup at 400-500 McKinney and 400-500 Walker run from 8 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10 through 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, the article notes. The McKinney closure affects the north curb lane, while the Walker closure affects both the north and south curb lanes.
More closures take effect the morning of the parade. Allen Parkway will close inbound and outbound between Taft and Bagby, along with the Lamar north bike lane along Sam Houston Park, beginning at 9 a.m. on Nov. 11. Bagby will close between Clay and McKinney, and Bagby southbound at Walker, starting at 9:45 a.m. that day. The McKinney off-ramp will remain open and exit north on Bagby throughout the closures.
Why the Holiday Falls on Nov. 11
Veterans Day traces back to Nov. 11, 1919, when it was first celebrated to mark the first anniversary of the end of World War I, according to Axios Houston. The date was originally observed as Armistice Day, honoring veterans of that war. Congress later amended a 1938 law that had made Armistice Day a legal holiday, changing its name to Veterans Day at the urging of veterans service organizations, and on June 1, 1954, Nov. 11 became a day honoring American veterans of all wars, per the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs' history of the holiday.
The occasion carries particular weight locally. Veterans make up 4.6% of the Houston metro population, with about one-third having served since 9/11, Axios Houston reported. Texas is home to nearly 1.4 million veterans, more than 250,000 of whom live in the Houston area, according to the same report.
