The Houston Rockets have a new jersey-adjacent teammate from across the Atlantic: ITA Airways. The Italian flag carrier and the NBA franchise announced an international marketing partnership on Monday, naming ITA Airways an Official Partner of the Rockets just months after the airline launched Houston's first-ever nonstop flight to Rome.
Brand Placement and Fan Activations on Deck
According to the joint announcement, reported by PR Newswire, the deal includes strategic brand placement during Rockets home games along with fan activities planned both in the arena and across the team's digital and social media channels. The release describes promotional opportunities and premium experiences tied to the partnership, though specifics on timing have not been detailed. As Houston Business Journal reported, the agreement arrives as ITA Airways looks to grow its presence and recognition in Houston and other U.S. markets.
Notably absent from the announcement are any figures. The deal's length and dollar value were not disclosed, as Airways Magazine pointed out in its own coverage of the tie-up.
A Route That's Already Paying Off
The partnership builds on momentum from ITA Airways' seasonal nonstop service between Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport and Rome Fiumicino, which launched May 1, 2026. That route marked the first time any airline had flown nonstop between the two cities, according to Aviation Week. ITA began the service with three flights per week before ramping up to five weekly frequencies in June, flying Airbus A330-900 aircraft on the seasonal route.
Houston became ITA's ninth North American destination with the launch, the same outlet noted, filling a gap in a market that had surprising demand without any direct service. Rome-Houston travel reached roughly 57,200 two-way passengers in 2024, making it Houston's fifth-largest European origin-and-destination market at the time and its largest without a nonstop option, per the Aviation Week analysis.
Momentum Behind the Marketing Push
In the Rockets announcement, ITA Airways framed the sports partnership as part of a broader U.S. growth strategy, saying it is an important opportunity to strengthen the airline's presence in the U.S. and in Houston specifically. The company also characterized its new Rome route as outperforming projections, stating that since its May 2026 launch it has been demonstrating its commercial potential with the route exceeding expectations.
For now, the collaboration is still in its early stages, with no confirmed schedule of specific fan events or appearances tied to the deal. But pairing an NBA franchise's global reach with a transatlantic route that's already beating forecasts gives both sides a reason to bet the partnership has room to grow.
