A shooting on East 27th Street in Jacksonville's Longbranch neighborhood, just east of Long Branch Elementary School, is under investigation by police. The incident unfolded Sunday night as part of what has already been described as a violent Halloween weekend across the city.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office confirmed it is investigating the shooting, according to First Coast News. The outlet reported that the shooting happened on East 27th Street, east of the elementary school, and that investigators were expected to release more information later Sunday night.
Details beyond the location remained limited as of Sunday night, and it was not immediately clear whether the sheriff's office had released the additional information it had promised.
Part of a String of Weekend Briefings
The Longbranch shooting was not an isolated event on the sheriff's office's radar Sunday. A separate report indicated that JSO had scheduled a 10:30 p.m. briefing specifically to give details of a shooting that occurred on the Eastside, and the briefing was described as the department's fourth of the day during Halloween weekend, per a report from Yahoo News.
Earlier Sunday, police had already released information about separate deadly shootings at Halloween parties in Arlington and Durkeeville, the same report noted. Less than an hour before that report was published, officers had also briefed the media on an officer-involved shooting at an apartment complex near Jacksonville International Airport.
A Neighborhood With Recent History
Longbranch has seen gun violence before. A man was found dead after a shooting in the neighborhood on October 31, 2024, according to News4JAX. In that case, officers responded to East 21st Street at around 4:30 p.m. after a report of a person shot and found a man with a gunshot wound who was pronounced dead at the scene.
At the time, police said they believed that shooting was an isolated incident with no additional threat to the community, the station reported. It remains unclear how, or whether, this weekend's Longbranch shooting relates to that earlier case, and no suspect information, motive, or further details about how Sunday's shooting unfolded have been made public.
This is a developing story, and Hoodline will update it as the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office releases additional information.
