King Arthur Baking's long-awaited storefront on King Street in Old Town Alexandria still doesn't have a confirmed opening day, even as The Alexandria Brief reported that the company announced December on social media. The company had said it hoped to welcome customers during the holiday season, and the December announcement gave no exact day as interior work continues inside the space.
The Alexandria Brief reported this week that King Arthur Baking is set for a December opening, but thezebra.org reported that the company said in a September 30 Q&A with Alexandria Living Magazine that no firm opening date had been announced. The company said it hopes to welcome customers for the holiday season and will share opening-celebration details later. That timeline lines up with the company's own Alexandria page, which states plainly: “We're excited to announce the opening of our store and school in Alexandria this autumn!”
The project has already slipped once. Per ALXnow, the company originally targeted a late-summer 2026 opening before pushing the timeline to fall. A spokesperson told the outlet that the instructional side of King Arthur's business had resonated with customers at its Fairfax location, a detail that helps explain why the Alexandria plan centers as much on classes as on retail shelves.
What's Actually Planned for the Space
Once it opens, the Old Town location will mark King Arthur's first combined retail store and baking school outside Vermont, the same report notes. The shop is expected to carry baking ingredients, mixes, tools, kitchen appliances and gifts alongside its class offerings, while the attached school is planned to teach bread, pastry and seasonal baking to both beginners and experienced bakers. A café or daily counter selling ready-to-eat baked goods has not been confirmed, the outlet's reporting states.
Alexandria Living Magazine has reported conflicting street numbers for the project in separate articles, identifying the address as both 617 King Street and 615 King Street in its coverage. The magazine has also reported that the planned space totals 5,285 square feet, with interior alterations underway inside.
A Slow Build Toward Launch
King Arthur confirmed its plans for an Alexandria location back in February, and the company closed its Fairfax Corner pop-up in June as it shifted focus toward the Old Town buildout. By July, the company was hiring a baking school manager specifically for the Alexandria site, according to seed reporting from The Alexandria Brief, signaling that staffing for classes was already underway months before any doors would open.
King Arthur has announced plans for the Alexandria store, but Old Town bakers eager for its arrival will have to wait for the company's promised autumn or holiday-season debut rather than a locked-in date on the calendar.
