A disagreement over a home security camera near East Charleston and North Lamb Boulevard spiraled into an arson and assault case that ended with SWAT officers surrounding Zamora-Aguilar's home; he exited after allegedly setting it on fire and was arrested. Las Vegas police say 50-year-old Juan Zamora-Aguilar attacked officers and neighbors and set two houses ablaze on Sept. 29, capping off an escalating feud that had been building for days.
According to KLAS 8 News Now, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officers responded to a call about a neighborhood dispute near East Charleston and North Lamb Boulevard on Sept. 29. By the time the chaos ended, SWAT officers had taken Zamora-Aguilar into custody on suspicion of attacking officers and neighbors before setting two homes on fire, the station reported.
The roots of the conflict trace back nearly two weeks earlier. An arrest report cited by the station says the dispute between Zamora-Aguilar and a neighbor began on Sept. 18 over a home camera system, after Zamora-Aguilar reportedly hit the neighbor in the chest upon learning how long the footage from the system was being retained. Police say Zamora-Aguilar was also investigating a separate suspicion of his own — that two tenants had stolen his guns.
Threats, a Shattered Window and a Claim of a Microchip
In the days that followed, the situation grew stranger and more volatile. Police say Zamora-Aguilar complained to neighbors that a microchip had been inserted into his head, and documents reviewed by the station say he threw a 32-ounce beer can through a neighbor's window, shattering it. A different neighbor told police that Zamora-Aguilar threatened to murder her with a machete while she was washing her car, and that same neighbor reported seeing him openly carrying a firearm.
When officers arrived to confront him, the station's report says Zamora-Aguilar yelled at police from behind an iron gate, insisting the government was watching him, and refused to identify himself. Documents say he also told people he “had something for them” before the confrontation turned physical.
Rocks, Metal Plates and Two Fires
Police say Zamora-Aguilar then began throwing baseball-sized rocks at officers and neighbors, with one police sergeant allegedly struck in the face, chin and chest. Documents reviewed by the outlet say he also attacked a marked police vehicle and a neighbor's car using weighted metal plates.
The violence escalated further when police say Zamora-Aguilar started a fire on a neighbor's property, which Las Vegas Fire and Rescue extinguished. He then allegedly set his own house on fire before stepping outside as SWAT officers surrounded the home, according to police. Separate local coverage from 8NewsNow and FOX5 Vegas detailed a barricade response in the same area near Charleston and Lamb involving SWAT officers and negotiators.
Charges and an Upcoming Competency Hearing
A police report says Zamora-Aguilar now faces charges of battery and assault on a protected person, first- and third-degree arson, destruction of property, and two counts of damaging a vehicle. Court documents say he remains on house arrest under electronic monitoring and has been ordered to avoid contact with his neighbors while the case proceeds.
Zamora-Aguilar is scheduled for a competency hearing on Monday, Nov. 9, according to court documents cited by the station. No further details on the case's current status or the outcome of that hearing have been reported.
