A woman died Wednesday night after her SUV struck a utility pole and an apartment building on Preston Highway. Police said the crash happened around 9 p.m. as she was driving northbound. She was the only person in the vehicle, and no one else was hurt.
Police said the apartment building remained stable after the impact, according to WLKY. The woman died at the scene. Investigators have not released her identity.
LMPD Traffic Unit Takes Over Investigation
The Louisville Metro Police Department's Traffic Unit is now investigating the crash, the station's report notes, though no findings beyond that have been made public. What led the driver to lose control has not been explained in the information released so far.
Earlier WLKY coverage described another fatal crash in south Louisville in which a woman lost control of her vehicle and struck a utility pole. Firefighters extinguished a fire that followed the crash; police said no other vehicles were involved, according to WLKY.
Earlier Fatal Crashes on Preston Highway
WLKY also reported an earlier fatal crash on Preston Highway: A car hit a utility pole around 4:30 a.m. on a Friday, killing one of two passengers and injuring the driver and the other passenger. Investigators said it appeared the driver was speeding and lost control, according to WLKY.
Planned safety work on Preston Highway
Louisville Metro's 2024 Vision Zero report said projects were in the works for High Injury Network corridors that include Preston Highway.
No cause has been determined in Wednesday night's crash, and the investigation by LMPD's Traffic Unit remains active.
