A longtime fixture near Capitol Square is calling last call for good. Madison's Restaurant & Bar, a restaurant and bar in Madison, Wisconsin, is closing after 26 years in business, with its final day expected to be November 15, 2026.
Staff confirmed the closure in an Instagram statement, as reported by WMTV 15 NEWS. “After 26 incredible years, it's time to say goodbye,” the staff wrote, describing the restaurant as a place for friendships, memories, laughter and unforgettable moments, and thanking customers, friends and family for being part of its journey. No reason for the closure was given in the statement.
On its own website, Madison's Restaurant & Bar describes itself as sitting just a block from Capitol Square in the historic First Settlement District, with a menu built around seasonal, local Midwestern ingredients infused with global flavors. The restaurant's Instagram account, @madisons119king, bills the spot as offering “warm, elevated dining with lively brunches and vibrant dinners in the heart of downtown Madison” to its more than 4,400 followers.
A Downtown Dining Scene in Flux
Madison's isn't the only name disappearing from the city's restaurant rolls. Dane County saw 39 new restaurant and food business concepts open alongside 15 closures in 2025 alone, according to Madison Magazine's year-end accounting published by Channel3000.com. Those 15 shuttered establishments had been in business anywhere from less than two years to as long as 39 years, the outlet reported.
Among the businesses that didn't make it past last year was Madistan, a family-owned Pakistani restaurant that closed after more than a decade when its building owners declined to renew its lease, per the same Channel3000.com account. Reunion Family Barbecue in Spring Green announced it would close in September after a 2024 stretch where it had temporarily shut down citing financial stressors, and the Madison taproom of Minocqua Brewing Co. was expected to close later in the year once its lease ran out.
Echoes of Porta Bella's Farewell
Madison has also said goodbye to older institutions this year. Porta Bella, a Madison staple for 58 years, served its last meal on February 28 after announcing on February 14 that it would close at the end of the month, according to The Cap Times. Madison's 26-year run falls well short of that milestone, but it still leaves a sizable gap in a downtown dining scene that keeps reshuffling its lineup of longtime favorites.
For now, Madison's Restaurant & Bar remains open for the next several days, with November 15 set as the last call for the restaurant that has anchored the block near Capitol Square for more than two and a half decades.
