The circumstances of the latest blast remain unclear as Los Angeles County has seen other serious fireworks-related incidents this year.
The explosion was reported near the City of Industry, and the man involved suffered injuries serious enough to land him in critical condition, according to CBS News. No further information about the man's identity or what preceded the blast has been released.
The incident lands in the middle of a run of fireworks-related tragedies across Los Angeles County in 2026. On Jan. 27, a suspected fireworks explosion tore through a Bell Gardens apartment building, killing one person and leaving two others injured, per KTLA. Investigators at that scene said they observed materials consistent with homemade explosives and fireworks, and nearly 60 firefighters were needed to put out the resulting fire. One of the injured victims remained in critical condition, the outlet reported.
Recent Fireworks Incidents Across the County
Months later, on May 9, a man was found dead after a fire tore through a detached garage in South Los Angeles, where large quantities of fireworks were later recovered. The Los Angeles Times reported that crews arrived in the 2400 block of 9th Avenue around 5:30 a.m. to find the structure fully involved with fire and explosions. LAPD spokesman Dennis Orris said at the time that investigators had not determined whether the fire killed the man or whether he had died before the blaze began.
Other serious cases have been reported elsewhere in the county. CBS News also described a separate incident in Pacoima in which an illegal fireworks cache exploded, hospitalizing one person in critical condition with burns covering more than half their body. In July, a fireworks-related fire in the same Pacoima neighborhood burned six homes and killed one person, the outlet reported.
Fire Responses and Enforcement
CBS News' analysis found 226 fireworks-related fires across Los Angeles in 2025. For the city, the outlet reported 722 fireworks-related fires and nearly 3,500 emergency calls over a five-year period dating back to at least 2020; during that span, the LAPD issued citations or made arrests 12 times, according to the station.
Local Fire-Code and Response Context
City of Industry's Chapter 15.28 adopts the Los Angeles County Fire Code as the city's fire code, subject to amendments in the city chapter, according to the City of Industry. That provision establishes the fire-code framework but does not specify which agency is administering fireworks enforcement or investigating Thursday's blast. For comparison, the Los Angeles County Fire Department reported 142 fireworks-ignited fires during the two weeks before and after the 2024 Fourth of July holiday, including 121 it attributed to illegal fireworks. That is a separate holiday-period tally of fire responses, not an annual count or a figure for the current blast.
The cause of Thursday's explosion and the hospitalized man's condition remain unknown. The available figures provide broader context on fireworks-related fires and enforcement, but do not establish what happened in this case.
