A man found unresponsive in a Jacksonville vacant lot Saturday night has died, and homicide detectives are now trying to piece together what happened to him. Officers came across the man while checking the 1400 block of Barnett Street around 9:30 p.m., rendered first aid, and waited for rescue crews before he was rushed to a hospital, where he later died.
According to News4JAX, Jacksonville Sheriff's Office officers attempted to check on the man and found him unresponsive in the vacant lot before Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department crews arrived and transported him to a local hospital, where he died. The outlet reported that JSO homicide detectives are now investigating the circumstances of his death. News4JAX described the location as being in Jacksonville's Mid-Westside neighborhood, while Action News Jax, in its own report, placed the vacant lot in the Durkeeville area — the two outlets differ on exactly which neighborhood the block falls under.
Circumstances of the Death Remain Unclear
Per the same News4JAX account, the circumstances surrounding the death remain unknown, and no witnesses have been identified. The Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death after an autopsy, the report notes, leaving the central question of how the man came to be unresponsive in the lot still unanswered for now.
JSO is asking anyone with information to come forward. Tipsters can call the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office at 904-630-0500, email [email protected], or reach Crimestoppers at 866-845-TIPS, the station's report indicates.
A Separate Shooting Nearby
The vacant-lot death comes amid other recent violence reported in the same general part of the city. Action News Jax reported on a shooting at the intersection of Hart Street and Barnett Street that left one man dead and another injured. In that report, JSO told the outlet the shooting appeared to be an isolated incident with no further immediate threat to the community — a separate case from the vacant-lot death, but one that underscores how often Barnett Street has turned up in the sheriff's office's recent casework.
For now, investigators have not released the identity of the man found in the vacant lot, nor any details about what led to his death. With no witnesses identified and an autopsy still pending, the case remains open as detectives continue working to answer the basic questions of who he was and what happened to him.
