A man with a knife was on a footbridge above the Connecticut Riverwalk and Bikeway in Springfield on Tuesday, prompting an hours-long standoff that drew police, fire crews and behavioral health specialists to the riverside path before the encounter ended peacefully and he was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
Springfield police officers and a clinician from Behavioral Health Network responded to a crisis involving the man at Riverfront Park, WWLP reported. Police spokesperson Ryan Walsh told the outlet that the man was on top of the footbridge at the Connecticut Riverwalk and Bikeway near West Columbus Avenue. Police say the response began at approximately 12 p.m.
A Tense Standoff Above the Water
The man was on the footbridge spanning the area between the Memorial Bridge and the North End Bridge. Springfield's crisis negotiation team communicated with him during the encounter.
Springfield police and fire personnel, Amtrak Police and Behavioral Health Network took part in the response, WWLP reported, citing Fire Captain Drew Piemonte.
Behavioral Health Network provides 24/7 crisis services for people of all ages, regardless of insurance, and says its clinicians can respond in community settings as well as emergency departments. The Springfield-based organization also offers crisis intervention and stabilization services, placing the clinician’s role in this response within a broader local crisis-care system. BHN’s emergency-services description outlines those services.
Nearly Four Hours of Negotiation
WWLP reported that police crisis negotiators and Behavioral Health Network clinicians negotiated with the man for nearly four hours. The prolonged effort ended peacefully.
Springfield’s police-behavioral health partnership predates this incident: the city’s FY25 budget described a co-response program with BHN in which licensed clinicians could respond alongside officers to mental-health calls. The budget said the model was intended to support real-time de-escalation and follow-up, including outcomes that could keep people out of jail. The city’s budget document describes the program and its goals.
The encounter ended peacefully. He was transported to Baystate for further evaluation, the department said.
What Remains Unknown
Officials have not released additional information about the man's condition or what led to the situation, WWLP reported. His identity and age beyond being described as an adult have not been made public, and it remains unclear whether the case involves any further proceedings. Springfield police characterized the overall response as a team effort that led to a successful outcome.
