A man was seriously injured Thursday after police say he was struck with a hatchet during what was initially reported as a stabbing on Providence's Broad Street. Officers arrived to find him bleeding from a deep laceration to his left wrist, though his injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Providence police responded to a reported stabbing at 386 Broad St., according to WJAR. When officers arrived, they found a man with a serious laceration to his left wrist, and police said he had reportedly been struck with a hatchet.

Bleeding Controlled, Injuries Called Non-Life-Threatening

Police said the victim's injuries were non-life-threatening and that officers were able to control the bleeding at the scene, per the station's report. The case remains under investigation, and no further details about the circumstances of the attack have been released.

The Nov. 5 incident is not the first time Providence has seen reports of hatchet violence this year. On March 30, 2026, a man identified by police as 28-year-old Jehvine Quaweay was accused of hitting another man in the head multiple times with a hatchet at Kennedy Plaza, WPRI reported.

Pattern Of Prior Hatchet Incidents In The City

In its coverage of that April arrest, WPRI reported that Quaweay was charged with felony assault and battery and disorderly conduct. Court records cited by WPRI indicated Quaweay was out on bail at the time of that alleged attack, following a separate case in which he was accused of assaulting a 59-year-old man with a hatchet in Providence the previous September.

Broad Street itself has also seen other recent violence. Hoodline previously reported that two cemetery caretakers were slashed in the face at Trinity Cemetery on Broad Street on Oct. 18, an attack authorities attributed to one of two suspects. The cemetery attack, Quaweay case and Thursday's attack were distinct events.

No arrest or suspect information has been released in connection with Thursday's attack, and police have not disclosed a motive. The investigation into what happened at 386 Broad St. continues.
