A masked gunman walked into a Dollar General on South Main Street in Winston-Salem Friday afternoon, pointed a handgun at the cashier, and walked out with cash from the register before disappearing on foot. Police are still searching for the suspect, and no arrests have been announced.
According to WXLV, officers responded at 3:50 p.m. Friday to the store at 3908 S. Main St. after a report of an armed robbery. Police said an unknown Black male suspect wearing a medical mask approached the cashier, displayed a handgun and demanded money.
The cashier emptied the register drawer and handed over an undisclosed amount of cash, excluding coins, the outlet reported. The suspect then fled on foot, heading south on S. Main Street, and police said no additional details were released about the case.
No Suspect Description Beyond Mask and Handgun
Investigators have not released a name, age, or further physical description of the suspect beyond the medical mask he wore during the holdup, per the same account. It is not known whether the robbery was caught on store surveillance cameras or whether any witnesses besides the cashier were inside at the time.
South Main Street has seen other Dollar General incidents reported over the years, though the evidence does not tie any of them to Friday's robbery. A separate robbery at a Dollar General at 2981 S. Main St. saw officers respond around 7:30 p.m. one Thursday after a suspect allegedly forced an employee to open a safe, according to WXII 12.
Past Incidents at Other Winston-Salem Dollar Stores
In another case detailed by WXLV, three suspects tried to leave a South Main Street Dollar General with a full shopping cart without paying, and one displayed a handgun and threatened an employee after being confronted. A different robbery at a Winston-Salem Dollar General left no injuries reported, according to the Winston-Salem Journal.
Yes! Weekly also reported on an armed robbery at a South Main Street Dollar General in which officers said they located a subject of interest during that investigation, though that case is separate from Friday's robbery. The Winston-Salem Journal has separately reported that a Winston-Salem man was charged in connection with robbing four different Family Dollar and Dollar General stores in November 2021 and January, an earlier case unrelated to this week's incident.
No arrests have been reported in Friday's robbery, and Winston-Salem police have not released a suspect description beyond what was shared immediately after the incident. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact local authorities as the investigation continues.
