A 23-year-old motorcyclist died Saturday afternoon after a single-motorcycle crash on the northbound H-2 Freeway near Meheula Parkway in Mililani, prompting a lengthy shutdown of the roadway and forcing drivers onto Kamehameha Highway. Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene after crews responded around 1:50 p.m.
According to Hawaii News Now, Honolulu police officers arrived shortly before 2 p.m. near the northbound Mililani on-ramp to find the crash scene, which led to the closure of all northbound lanes near Ka Uka Boulevard. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser separately reported the crash occurred Oct. 31, consistent with the Saturday afternoon timeline. KITV also confirmed the age and location of the victim, reporting that a 23-year-old man was found dead on arrival near Meheula Parkway in Mililani, per KITV.
Freeway Shutdown Snarls Mililani Traffic
Northbound traffic was diverted off the freeway at the Ka Uka Boulevard off-ramp onto northbound Kamehameha Highway, according to the same Hawaii News Now report. The roadway was expected to remain closed for several hours, and no estimated reopening time had been announced as of the report. The cause of the crash remained under investigation, the station noted.
Oahu's Traffic Fatality Numbers This Year
The crash comes amid a year that has otherwise seen fewer traffic deaths on Oahu than in 2025. The Honolulu Police Department reported that as of Sept. 8, Oahu had recorded 27 traffic fatalities in 2026, compared with 62 during the same period in 2025, according to a statement from the Honolulu Police Department. HPD attributed ongoing crash risks to speeding, impaired driving, distraction, reckless driving and failure to yield, and said it would continue high-visibility traffic enforcement, impaired-driving enforcement and community education through the fall and into the holiday season.
Earlier this year, another motorcycle fatality drew similar attention. In July, an 18-year-old motorcyclist, identified as Gabriel Gonzales of Texas, died after crashing on the eastbound Kalaeloa Boulevard off-ramp in Kapolei, a crash that marked Oahu's 21st traffic fatality of 2026, compared with 39 at the same point in 2025, Hawaii News Now reported. Police said Gonzales lost control of the motorcycle and struck a concrete barrier before being ejected, and investigators believed speed was a contributing factor, though it remained unknown whether drugs or alcohol played a role.
Saturday's crash in Mililani adds another name to this year's tally of motorcycle fatalities on Oahu, even as the island's overall traffic death count continues to trend below last year's pace. Investigators have not yet said what caused the rider to crash near Meheula Parkway, and the circumstances remain under review.
