A shooting near 26th and Capitol in Milwaukee left one person wounded in the early morning hours Wednesday, with police still hunting for whoever pulled the trigger. The victim was rushed to a local hospital for treatment, and investigators have not said what sparked the gunfire.
According to FOX6 News Milwaukee, the shooting happened around 2:36 a.m. near 26th and Capitol. The outlet's account attributed to the Milwaukee Police Department says the victim was 33 years old, while the report's introductory text describes the wounded person as 36 — a discrepancy that remains unresolved in the available reporting. Milwaukee police are actively investigating what led to the shooting and are searching for suspects, the station reports.
Police Still Piecing Together What Happened
No arrests or suspect descriptions have been released, and the circumstances that led up to the shooting remain under investigation. Officers are asking anyone with information to call Milwaukee police at 414-935-7360. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 414-224-TIPS or through the P3 Tips App.
The stretch of Capitol Drive running through 26th Street has seen repeated gun violence in recent memory, though nothing in the available reporting ties those earlier incidents to Wednesday's shooting. A fatal shooting was previously reported near the same intersection, with an unidentified man pronounced dead at the scene, according to CBS 58. On an April 28 night, a 52-year-old Milwaukee man was shot near 26th and Capitol around 2:55 a.m. and was expected to survive, the same outlet reported separately.
A Pattern Along Capitol Drive
Other shootings have clustered along the Capitol Drive corridor in recent months. Milwaukee police reported a nonfatal shooting on Aug. 19, 2026, on the 6200 block of W. Capitol Drive that left a 27-year-old victim hospitalized, according to a police press release carried by Urban Milwaukee. Police said the circumstances were under investigation and that they continued to seek unknown suspects in that case as well.
Elsewhere along the corridor, a 36-year-old was shot and killed near 24th Place and Capitol Drive at 11:18 a.m. on a Monday morning, per WISN. CBS 58 also reported a fatal shooting near 25th and Capitol on Nov. 3 around 11:05 p.m. that left a 22-year-old dead at the scene, and a shooting near 27th and Capitol on Dec. 30, 2024, that killed a 44-year-old.
Citywide Shootings Trending Down
The incident comes as Milwaukee's overall shooting numbers have been trending downward. Nonfatal shootings in the city fell from 272 in the first half of 2025 to 199 in the first half of 2026, a 27% drop, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Homicides over the same period dropped 30%, from 70 to 49.
Even with that decline, the newspaper's July report found that Milwaukee's nonfatal-shooting clearance rate stood at just 41% for the first half of the year — meaning well over half of such cases remained unsolved. Wednesday's shooting near 26th and Capitol is now among the cases Milwaukee police are working to close, with no suspects publicly identified as of the latest reporting.
