A motorcyclist died early Tuesday after colliding with an SUV at the intersection of Cypress Gardens Road and Lazy Hill Road in Moncks Corner. The crash happened around 5:50 a.m. and involved a 2002 Harley-Davidson motorcycle and a 2020 Dodge SUV. The rider was rushed to a hospital, where he later died.

According to Live 5 News, the motorcycle was traveling south on Cypress Gardens Road when the Dodge SUV attempted to turn north from Lazy Hill Road onto Cypress Gardens Road, and the two vehicles collided. The South Carolina Highway Patrol confirmed that one person died in the crash, with Cpl. Nick Pye providing the approximate time of the collision. As of publication, the Dodge driver was not reported to have been injured.

The Berkeley County Coroner's Office had not released the victim's name as of the station's report, and the crash remains under investigation. No cause, fault determination, or citations had been disclosed at that point.

A Road Already Under Scrutiny

Tuesday's fatal wreck adds to a string of serious crashes that have put Cypress Gardens Road under a spotlight in recent months. Earlier this year, more than 160 Berkeley County residents signed a petition demanding a traffic study and safety improvements along the corridor, according to the same outlet's earlier coverage. Petitioners pointed to rapid residential growth, increased traffic, and infrastructure that they said had not kept pace with development.

That petition centered on the nearby Grande Tree Drive, Garrott Avenue and Cypress Gardens Road intersection, a different location from Tuesday's crash site at Lazy Hill Road. State Department of Public Safety data cited in that report showed 49 collisions at or near that intersection over the preceding five years, with 29 people injured. Berkeley County officials said at the time that they had worked with a nearby Google facility on a traffic impact analysis and intended eventually to signalize that intersection.

Pattern of Fatal Motorcycle Crashes

Petition organizer Sophie Cox told Live 5 News that her own husband had been in an accident coming off Garrott Avenue in 2021, part of what residents describe as a recurring hazard on the corridor. Just over a week before Tuesday's crash, Live 5 News reported that 42-year-old Dennis Montgomery Sweatman of Bonneau died in the emergency room from injuries sustained in a separate motorcycle crash in Moncks Corner.

A previous Cypress Gardens Road motorcycle crash, reported by ABC News 4, involved only the motorcycle, which ran off the right side of the road and into the woods. Tuesday's crash, by contrast, involved two vehicles at an intersection. No further details on the investigation, the victim's identity, or any resulting safety changes had been released as of publication.
