A motorcyclist was killed early Wednesday morning in a crash with a vehicle at the intersection of Highway 85 and 112th Avenue in Commerce City, and police say the driver is expected to face charges. Officers were called to the scene around 6:08 a.m., according to local reports, and found the motorcyclist had already died from injuries suffered in the collision.
According to KDVR, officers responded to the crash involving a vehicle and a motorcycle at the intersection just after 6 a.m. Preliminary information indicated the vehicle rear-ended the motorcycle as the rider approached 112th Avenue, the station reported. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Commerce City Police Department's Crash Team is investigating the fatal collision, confirming on Facebook that its traffic unit was handling the case. Per the department's post, Highway 85 was closed at 112th Avenue as the investigation got underway.
Driver Expected to Face Charges
Police say the driver involved in the crash is expected to face a number of charges, though the department has not specified what those charges will be, the station's report notes. No further details about the driver or the motorcyclist, including their identities, have been released as the investigation continues.
The crash adds to a troubling pattern along the corridor. Per the same account, police figures show six fatal crashes on Highway 85 in Brighton and three fatal crashes on the highway in Commerce City since 2023.
Another Deadly Crash Nearby
Wednesday's crash is not the only recent deadly collision in the area. In a separate incident, a five-vehicle crash in Commerce City killed one person, the article notes. That crash shut down U.S. 85 entirely between 120th and 112th avenues for several hours before it reopened.
In that unrelated collision, the at-fault driver, a 20-year-old, and one other person were taken to a hospital with injuries, according to the same report. Police were investigating that crash as DUI-related, and the driver faced DUI and vehicular homicide charges. The two incidents remain separate matters, with Wednesday's motorcycle crash still under active investigation by Commerce City's Crash Team.
