A 38-year-old man remains in critical but stable condition at Lincoln Hospital more than three weeks after he was stabbed in the back while trying to break up a street fight in Mott Haven, and the person responsible is still at large.
A Fight He Tried To Stop Turned On Him
Police say the man saw two people fighting in front of 2413 Third Ave. just after 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 16 and stepped in to try to intervene, according to News12. Detectives say one of the people involved in the fight turned on him, threatening him before pulling out a knife and stabbing him in the back. Paramedics rushed him to Lincoln Hospital, where he was listed in critical but stable condition as of Saturday evening, more than three weeks after the attack, per the same report.
The NYPD is asking the public for help identifying the man responsible and has urged anyone with information to call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). No suspect description or arrest has been made public, and the station's report does not say what sparked the initial altercation between the two people the victim saw fighting.
Not The Only Recent Bronx Stabbing Tied To A Brawl
The Mott Haven case isn't the only recent Bronx stabbing that grew out of a fight between others. Just over a week after the Third Avenue attack, police said a brawl between two patrons at Noches de Palenque, a bar at 561 Southern Blvd. in nearby Longwood, spilled into the street around 3:30 a.m. on Oct. 25, according to amny.com. A suspect stabbed a 40-year-old man in the stomach during that fight, and paramedics again took the victim to Lincoln Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition, the outlet reported.
In August, police sought four people wanted in a separate, violent gang assault in Mott Haven. According to bronx.news12.com, a 28-year-old man was walking near East 145th Street and Third Avenue when he got into an argument with a group of people, who then punched, kicked, and stabbed him multiple times. The cases are separate incidents with no established connection to one another, but they underscore how quickly a street-level dispute in the Bronx can turn violent for the people caught in the middle of it.
For now, the man hurt trying to defuse the Oct. 16 fight remains hospitalized, and investigators are still working to identify who stabbed him. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers.
