A 28-year-old Norfolk man died Monday afternoon after his motorcycle struck the back of an SUV on eastbound I-64 in Chesapeake, near the Battlefield Boulevard exit. The crash happened around 3:25 p.m. as traffic in the area had backed up, and the motorcyclist did not survive his injuries.
According to WAVY.com, the two-vehicle wreck unfolded at Exit 290A, a stretch of eastbound I-64 that feeds into one of Chesapeake's busiest interchanges. A preliminary investigation found that a Toyota RAV4 had slowed down for congested traffic when the motorcycle ran into the rear of the SUV, the station reported, citing Virginia State Police.
The motorcycle operator was identified as Emmanuel Isaiah Davidson, 28, of Norfolk. He suffered fatal injuries in the collision, per the same report. The driver of the Toyota RAV4 was not harmed in the incident.
Investigation Still Open
As of Tuesday, the station's report indicated the investigation remains ongoing, with no further findings released on what led up to the crash or whether any additional factors were involved. Virginia State Police have not yet announced the results of that inquiry.
The crash adds to a string of fatal motorcycle wrecks along Hampton Roads highways this year, though state figures suggest the broader trend may be moving in the opposite direction. A snippet from the Virginia DMV's 2025 Virginia Traffic Crash Facts report shows, according to Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, 101 motorcycle fatalities statewide, a 13.7 percent decrease from 2024, though the full context behind that figure was not available.
No additional details about the crash, including any citations or determination of fault, have been released. Hoodline will update this story as more information becomes available.
