North Charleston police were called to a Dollar General on Northbrook Boulevard around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday after reports of a belligerent suspect with a gun. Officers arrested 22-year-old Nakyah Denae Odom, accused of following the store manager through the aisles and threatening to shoot her after a dispute over something Odom believed the manager had said about her.
According to abcnews4.com, officers with the North Charleston Police Department responded to the store for calls about a belligerent suspect with a gun. Police say Odom accused the manager of making a negative comment about her, then started following the manager around the store before reaching into a bookbag and threatening to shoot.
The manager has denied making the comment Odom allegedly attributed to her, according to Live 5 News. Odom reportedly entered the store while the manager was assisting customers before the argument escalated.
Suspect Admitted Having a Handgun, Police Say
When officers asked about the weapon, Odom admitted that she had her husband's handgun, police said, per the abcnews4.com report. The outlet identified the recovered weapon as a .9mm, while the station's report described it as a 9mm handgun — the two accounts differ on the exact caliber, and that detail has not been independently resolved.
Odom was charged with first-degree assault and battery and was transported to the Al Cannon Detention Center, according to the same abcnews4.com account of the North Charleston Police Department's actions. No information has been provided on whether the manager or anyone else was physically harmed during the confrontation.
Case Remains Under Review
No primary police report or additional official statement has been made public beyond what police told reporters, and there is no confirmed update yet on how the charge will proceed through the courts. The incident remains a local flashpoint for a North Charleston neighborhood where a routine stop at a Dollar General turned into an armed confrontation in broad daylight.
