A domestic dispute on one of Orlando's busiest toll roads turned into an hours-long standoff Wednesday morning, after Orange County deputies say a man shot at his wife while she was driving on SR-408, then turned the gun on himself as detectives closed in to arrest him. The woman was not injured. The man was rushed to a hospital and remained in critical condition.

Deputies initially responded to the call at approximately 7 a.m. Wednesday near mile marker 15 in the Goldenrod area of east Orange County, according to WFTV. The station reports that the man shot at his wife while she was driving, and that she was not hurt in the attack.

After the shooting, the woman met with responding deputies, who then obtained an arrest warrant for her husband, per the same report. Detectives located the man, and as they moved to take him into custody, he shot himself in the head. He was transported to a hospital, where deputies said he remains in critical condition.

Highway Shut Down in Both Directions

The law enforcement response prompted a temporary full closure of SR-408 in both the eastbound and westbound directions, snarling traffic through the heart of the morning commute. Online records listed the shutdown simply as police activity, the station's report notes.

By midday, the westbound lanes of SR-408 had reopened, while the eastbound lanes remained closed in the area, WFTV reported. ClickOrlando similarly reported that all lanes were originally closed before traffic cameras showed westbound lanes beginning to move again.

Not the First Closure Near Goldenrod

This stretch of SR-408 has seen law enforcement activity shut down traffic before. In June 2025, numerous officers blocked the highway in east Orange County while deputies responded to a report of a “suicidal subject,” according to ClickOrlando's coverage at the time. That closure blocked westbound SR-408 from Colonial Drive to Rouse Road before reopening around 6:30 a.m.

An earlier, separate incident in May 2018 also drew a heavy response to the corridor, when a 21-year-old man was shot twice in the head while on SR-408, ClickOrlando reported. Westbound lanes near Goldenrod Road were closed for hours following that shooting.

No further details on the identity of the man involved in Wednesday's shooting, the charges tied to the arrest warrant, or the status of any investigation have been released.
