A passenger was killed and a driver was hospitalized Saturday after a two-vehicle crash on SC-340 in Darlington County sent one car careening into a ditch and flipping over. The crash happened around 11:30 a.m. and involved just two cars, one of which rolled after running off the roadway.
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, as reported by WPDE, one car was traveling south on SC-340 when it struck the rear of a car heading north. The impact sent the southbound car off the road, where it hit a ditch and overturned.
The passenger riding in that first car died in the crash, while its driver was taken to a local hospital, the outlet reported. No injuries were reported among the occupants of the second car, the one that had been heading north before it was struck from behind.
What Remains Unknown
As of Sunday morning, no further information had been released about the crash, per the same report. The identities of the passenger and driver involved have not been disclosed, nor has any detail about the cause of the collision, the exact location along SC-340, or whether citations have been issued.
This is not the first serious crash reported on that stretch of road. Back on July 9, 2022, South Carolina Highway Patrol investigated a three-car, fiery crash on Highway 340 at South Center Road in Darlington County, according to an earlier WPDE report. Details of what sparked that 2022 wreck were also still under investigation at the time of that story's publication.
Statewide Safety Push Continues
The crash comes amid a broader effort by state officials to drive down traffic deaths across South Carolina. According to preliminary figures from the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, the state saw a 21% reduction in traffic fatalities over four years, falling from 1,198 deaths in 2021 to 946 in 2025. Those numbers remain preliminary and are subject to revision as more data comes in.
No verified county-level fatality total directly comparable to Saturday's crash was available at publication. The state agency continues to update its daily and county-by-county fatality counts, though those figures are also described as preliminary pending further compilation.
