A passenger died and a driver was seriously injured after a vehicle struck a utility pole on State Route 22A in Granville early Sunday, New York State Police told NEWS10. Troopers responded at about 4 a.m.; the passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver was airlifted to Albany Medical Center.
The crash closed the roadway for several hours while investigators worked at the scene. NEWS10 reported that the road later reopened. Police have not publicly detailed what caused the vehicle to hit the pole or described the roadway conditions at the time.
A separate crash on Route 22
Granville has also had a separately reported fatal crash on nearby State Route 22: in July 2025, a northbound vehicle crossed into the southbound lane in a two-car head-on collision, CBS 6 Albany reported. The roadway remained closed until about 1 a.m. on July 25, 2025. That incident involved a different route and date; the available reporting does not connect it to Sunday’s Route 22A crash.
Statewide context
Across New York, motor-vehicle fatalities rose 25.8% from 2019 through 2022, reaching their highest level in a decade in 2022, according to the New York State Office of the State Comptroller. Those statewide figures provide broader safety context but do not explain the circumstances or cause of the Granville crash.
