A Corridor Already Flagged for Safety Concerns
Sunday's crash adds to a string of incidents that have drawn scrutiny to Louisville's roadways in recent years. Citywide, 136 roadway fatalities were recorded in 2023, up from 128 the year before, making it the deadliest year for crashes in Louisville since 2016, per the Courier Journal. Between 2016 and 2023, the city tallied 893 roadway fatalities and 4,146 serious injuries, the newspaper reported.
Other crashes have struck close to this stretch of Louisville in the past. A pedestrian was left in critical condition after being hit by a vehicle near I-264 last December, and a deadly crash was reported at 7th and Hill streets back in February 2021 — both logged separately by WLKY as the station has tracked incidents across the city's roadways.
