U.S. Central Command has stood up a new task force based in Tampa to go after Iran's overland and Caspian Sea trade routes, extending a naval blockade that Washington says has already choked off tens of billions of dollars in Iranian oil exports. The unit, named Task Force Iron Gate, was established Saturday, Nov. 7, 2026, at the direction of CENTCOM Commander Adm. Brad Cooper, and it marks the Pentagon's latest move to squeeze Tehran's remaining avenues for moving weapons, technology and money.

A Small Staff With a Big Mandate

Task Force Iron Gate comprises roughly 20 civilian and military personnel based in Tampa, Florida, according to Kurdistan24. Despite its modest size, the task force is charged with coordinating across the U.S. government to prevent the movement of advanced weapons systems, dual-use technologies, sanctioned materials and illicit revenue streams across Iran's land borders and the Caspian Sea. Yahoo News similarly described it as an internal CENTCOM staff of about 20 civilian and military personnel working out of Tampa.

Cooper said the initiative is meant to reinforce the effectiveness of the existing U.S. naval blockade against Iran by extending enforcement efforts to alternative transportation networks, the Kurdistan24 report noted. UPI reported that Cooper framed the move in broader terms, saying that strengthening CENTCOM's collaboration with interagency partners would further constrain Iran's ability to finance terrorism, rebuild weapons factories and replenish its military.

Filling the Gaps Left by the Blockade

As first reported by Reuters, the move comes as U.S. officials look to close gaps in a naval blockade on ships entering or departing Iranian ports that has already restricted Iranian crude exports. With sea lanes under pressure, overland transportation routes and alternative maritime corridors have become increasingly important to Tehran's efforts to maintain trade and access supplies, per the same Kurdistan24 account. CBS News has reported that commerce between China and Iran has increasingly shifted overland, including by train across Central Asia, because of the blockade on Iranian ports, while Iran has also conducted substantial trade with Russia over land and across the Caspian Sea.

UPI reported separately that CENTCOM created the new task force specifically to prevent Iran from using ground routes to move advanced weapons and materials. Exactly how Iron Gate will carry out that mission, and whether its work will involve any military operations, was not detailed in the announcement, according to CBS News.

Billions in Lost Oil Revenue

CENTCOM has said its naval blockade has already prevented Iran from exporting more than $25 billion worth of crude oil in recent months, a figure cited in Kurdistan24's reporting on the task force's formation. That estimate underscores the financial stakes behind the Pentagon's push to extend enforcement beyond the water and onto Iran's land borders, where trucks, trains and cargo shipments have offered Tehran a workaround to the maritime squeeze.
