What investigators are examining
Police recovered one fragment at the scene and are reviewing surveillance video from nearby homes as they investigate the shooting, according to NBC10 Philadelphia. The report gave no information about a motive or further details about the teenager’s arrest warrant.
The shooting was reported around 8 p.m. Wednesday near North Sydenham Street and Cecil B. Moore Avenue. NBC10, citing Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small, reported that a 17-year-old approached officers on patrol and told them he had been shot in the leg.
Officers took the teen to a nearby hospital, where he was in stable condition. He is being held there as a prisoner because he was wanted on an arrest warrant, NBC10 reported.
NBC10 reported that witnesses described a person in dark clothing and a face mask approaching the teenager and firing once. The person was later seen heading south on Sydenham Street, away from Cecil B. Moore Avenue.
Citywide homicide figures
The city recorded 222 homicides in 2025, 17% fewer than in 2024, according to The Pew Charitable Trusts. That citywide homicide figure provides context but does not establish a trend for shootings in the area of Wednesday’s incident.
