HCA Florida Fawcett Hospital in Port Charlotte is putting $16 million into expanding and modernizing its emergency department, adding nine exam rooms, six fast-track spaces and a dedicated CT scanner to a facility that has been feeling the strain of a growing community. Construction is expected to begin early 2027.

The investment, announced by HCA Florida, will expand the hospital's emergency care capabilities and modernize facilities to better serve patients and families as the region grows, according to Your Sun. The nine new exam rooms will bring the department's total to 29, and the project also calls for six fast-track spaces designed to help with patient care capacity. A dedicated computed tomography unit for the emergency department is intended to improve access to advanced imaging.

Fawcett Hospital CEO Philip Marchesini called the project an exciting milestone for the hospital and the community it serves, adding that the investment reflects a commitment to high-quality emergency care for the community today and for future generations. Beyond the exam rooms and imaging, the plan includes a new nursing station and support areas, an expanded patient waiting area and lobby, and a new entrance canopy intended to improve accessibility and arrival needs for patients coming through the door.

Why the ER Needs More Room

Dr. Scott Howard, the hospital's Emergency Services Medical Director, framed the expansion as a direct response to population growth in the area. As the community grows, so does the demand for timely, accessible emergency care, Howard said, according to the same report. He added that the project invests in neighbors' health and well-being, supports healthcare professionals, and prepares the hospital for future needs.

The hospital describes the upgrades as supporting more efficient delivery of care and optimizing patient flow through the department. Per the news release cited in the report, the project represents a step in the hospital's long-term vision to strengthen healthcare services and address evolving community needs. Fawcett's emergency department currently operates with 20 beds around the clock, according to HCA Florida Fawcett Hospital.

Part of a Broader Regional Push

This ER expansion follows a separate, earlier project at Fawcett: a $60 million hospital expansion and renovation whose first phase wrapped up with 12 additional critical-care rooms and a pre-operative treatment area expanded to 43 bays, according to Medical Construction and Design. That phase added 40,000 square feet of new space and renovated another 20,000 square feet, with a second phase planned to boost operating-room capacity from 10 to 12 suites, originally scheduled for completion by the end of 2024.

HCA Florida Fawcett has also been building out emergency access beyond its main Port Charlotte campus. In 2023, the health system opened a 10,820-square-foot freestanding emergency room at 150 Tamiami Trail in Port Charlotte, intended to serve the western part of Port Charlotte and the eastern portion of North Port, per the Herald-Tribune. The facility operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, offering full emergency services for adults and children.

The newspaper also reported that HCA Florida Englewood had purchased 30 acres in the North Port community of Wellen Park with plans to build its own freestanding emergency room, while Sarasota Memorial Health Care System has been operating a freestanding ER at 2345 Bobcat Village Center Road and planning a hospital on 32 acres near the Sumter Boulevard exit off Interstate 75. Together, the projects point to a region where multiple health systems are racing to keep emergency capacity ahead of population growth.
