Providence gets an unusually warm day Thursday, with partly sunny skies and a high near 73 before a wet pattern takes over. The real weather shift arrives after dark, when rain, fog and a slight chance of thunderstorms begin moving into the region.

Southerly winds are expected Thursday, while rain chances stay low for most of the day. Temperatures should remain mild into the evening.

Rain Moves In After Dark

Showers could begin between 9 p.m. Thursday and 2 a.m. Friday, followed by patchy fog and more persistent rain toward daybreak. The overnight low is expected to settle near 62, and forecasters say a thunderstorm cannot be ruled out late in the night.

Friday looks like the soggiest part of the stretch, with rain, a high near 70 and possible thunderstorms. The National Weather Service says 1 to 2 inches of rain could fall across eastern southern New England, with a narrow area of up to 3 inches possible from southern Rhode Island into southeastern Massachusetts.

That is a substantial wet-weather upgrade from the earlier Hoodline forecast. No watches or warnings are posted for Rhode Island, but poor drainage and clogged storm drains could create pockets of urban flooding, especially where fallen leaves are blocking runoff.

Weekend Turns Cooler, Then Dries Out

Saturday brings a chance of rain, with a high near 66. Saturday night stays unsettled with another chance of rain and a low around 44.

Sunday could start with a lingering shower before skies turn mostly sunny, with a colder northwesterly flow. Monday and Tuesday look brighter and mainly dry, with highs around 58 to 60.

The dry stretch continues into Veterans Day on Wednesday, with highs in the 50s. Colder nights will follow, including a low near 32 Wednesday night.
