Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence has a new arrival to show off: Fiona, the zoo's resident Linne's two-toed sloth, gave birth to her fifth baby on Oct. 28. The zoo says mother and baby are doing well, spending their days snuggling and bonding as the newest member of the sloth family settles in.
The zoo announced the birth in a social media post on Nov. 4, telling followers that Fiona was already proving to be a patient and loving mother, according to WPRI. The outlet reports that Fiona and her baby are doing well and spending lots of time snuggling and bonding in the days since the birth.
A Growing Family at the Zoo
This latest baby brings Fiona's total to five offspring born at the Providence zoo. The station's report traces her history as a mother back to 2020, when she gave birth to her first baby, followed by a second baby named Jeffrey in 2023, a third named Scout in October 2024, and a fourth named Quint in October 2025 — with births in October 2024, 2025 and 2026. WPRI described the zoo's Linne's two-toed sloth family as having grown once again with this fifth birth.
Notably, there's a small discrepancy in how outlets have spelled the name of Fiona's first baby. Per the same account, WPRI refers to the 2020 baby as Beanie, while a 2020 Boston Globe report on the same birth spells the name Beany.
How Fiona's First Baby Got Its Name
The Boston Globe's report offers a look at how that first naming happened. The outlet reported that Fiona and a sloth named Wesley welcomed their baby on May 13, 2020, and the zoo then ran a public naming contest that drew more than 1,000 suggested names and raised $15,745 in donations for the zoo's animals.
The name Beany ultimately won with 347 votes, according to the Boston Globe, which reported that the name honors Brenton Gaudreault, a teen who was affectionately nicknamed “Beany” by his family. It is not clear from available reporting whether the zoo has run a similar public naming contest for any of Fiona's subsequent babies, including the one born in October.
For now, Roger Williams Park Zoo says the focus is simply on Fiona and her newest baby bonding together.
