A comedian who built his career on two continents is headed to the Houston Improv, with organizers billing Des Bishop as a rising star in the United States and a massive name across the Atlantic in Ireland. The club sits at 7620 Katy Fwy #45 in Houston, a familiar address for local comedy fans.
From Queens to a Career in Ireland
Bishop's story starts far from Texas. He is a native New Yorker who moved from Queens to Ireland in his mid-teens, relocating in 1990, according to his biography on Improv.com. That cross-cultural upbringing became central to his comedic identity, fueling a career that has spanned stand-up specials, television projects, and years spent as one of Ireland's most recognizable comedic voices.
His breakthrough came with the television series The Des Bishop Work Experience, which first brought him to prominence in 2004, per the same Improv.com biography. He followed that success two years later with a second acclaimed series, Joy In The Hood, in which he taught stand-up comedy in disadvantaged areas across four major Irish cities, the outlet notes.
A Trip to Beijing and a Hit Show for RTE
Bishop's curiosity about language and culture later took him even further from home. In 2013, he traveled to Beijing, China, to learn Mandarin, according to Improv.com's account of his career. The resulting project became Breaking China, described by the same source as another major hit for Irish broadcaster RTE in 2014.
More recently, Bishop has continued building his stand-up résumé. CultureMap Houston identifies his special Of All People, released in 2024, as his most recent stand-up work, part of a comedic catalog spanning years of TV and live performance.
