The NFL has fined Raiders safety Jeremy Chinn $17,911 for a hit on Jets receiver Garrett Wilson that the league classified as a hit on a defenseless player, a penalty that came just one play before Chinn iced Las Vegas's 38-33 win over New York with an interception in the end zone.
Chinn made helmet-to-helmet contact while tackling Wilson on a 15-yard completion, drawing an unnecessary-roughness flag with 14 seconds left that tacked on an extra 15 yards for the Jets, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The NFL deemed it a hit on a defenseless player in levying the fine, the paper reports. On the very next snap, Chinn picked off a pass in the end zone at MetLife Stadium to seal the victory for the Raiders.
Wilson Sidelined for Chiefs Matchup
The penalty proved costly beyond the field position it cost New York. Wilson, the Jets' top receiver, entered concussion protocol and was ruled out of the team's game against the Kansas City Chiefs after not practicing during the week leading up to that contest, per the same Review-Journal report.
Chinn addressed the hit afterward, saying he was disappointed by the penalty and didn't see another way to play the contact while going for the ball. In comments reported by the Review-Journal following the Raiders' win on November 1, Chinn said, “I didn't know how I could play it any differently trying to make a play on the ball.”
Jets Lineman Also Fined From Same Game
Chinn wasn't the only player disciplined out of the Raiders-Jets matchup. The NFL also fined Jets starting right guard Joe Tippman $12,537 for an illegal low block, which the league flagged as unnecessary roughness in the first quarter of the same game, according to Heavy.com.
The fines against Chinn and Tippman landed amid a broader wave of league discipline. The NFL issued 31 fines in Week 8, the second-highest weekly total of the season at that point, trailing only the 38 fines handed out in Week 2, per CBS Sports.
For the Raiders, the play remains a defining moment of their win over New York even with the financial penalty attached. Chinn's interception closed out the 38-33 victory, but the hit that preceded it has now drawn league punishment and left Wilson sidelined for his team's following game.
