Thousands of walkers are expected to fill Coastal Credit Union Music Park at Walnut Creek on Sunday, November 8, as the Breakthrough T1D Walk returns to Raleigh with a parade, food trucks, and a route lined with tributes to people living with Type 1 Diabetes. Activities kick off at noon, with the walk itself stepping off at 3:30 p.m.
The Raleigh event is part of a nationwide push by Breakthrough T1D, which describes itself as a leading global organization focused on Type 1 diabetes research and advocacy, according to CBS 17. The walk is designed to unite families, friends, and businesses across the Triangle to raise awareness and funds for T1D research and community support, the station reports.
A Day Built Around Community, Not Just Miles
Walk activities, food trucks, and vendors open at noon, with roughly a dozen food trucks expected on site, though the organizer notes that specific trucks and menus may change, according to Breakthrough T1D’s own event page. From there, the day builds toward a 3 p.m. T1D Champions Parade recognizing people living with T1D by their years since diagnosis, per the same CBS 17 report.
A welcome and program presentation follows at 3:15 p.m., and the walk officially begins at 3:30 p.m. Along the route, families and supporters can honor local T1D champions with personalized signs displayed along a stretch known as the Breakthrough Mile, the station notes. Elsewhere on the course, a feature called Pathway to Progress displays signs charting T1D research milestones, from the introduction of continuous glucose monitors to more recent breakthroughs.
Two Route Lengths, Two Slightly Different Measurements
Walkers have a choice of distances. CBS 17 describes the main route as approximately one mile on a fully paved course, while Breakthrough T1D’s own event listing puts the main route at approximately 1.05 miles, with a turnaround point offering a shorter 0.75-mile option for those who want it. Either way, the course is fully paved and accessible.
Attendees can also post tributes, wishes, or messages of hope on a dedicated community wall set up for the event, and walkers wave flags symbolizing their connection to T1D during the opening ceremony. Registration remains open for anyone who wants to form a team, make a donation, or sign up to volunteer, and there is no fundraising minimum required to take part, according to Breakthrough T1D.
Parking Closures And What To Expect On Site
Organizers are warning drivers that all parking lots at the venue will close from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. while participants walk past them, so attendees planning to arrive later in the afternoon should factor in the closure window. The walk is expected to wrap up around 4 p.m.
Last year’s Raleigh walk drew more than 3,000 participants and raised nearly $506,000 for Type 1 diabetes research and support, according to WRAL. That total was part of a broader national effort: Breakthrough T1D announced in February that it had launched more than 120 walks across the country for 2026, building on momentum from events like the 2025 Beat the Bridge walk in Seattle, where SanMar and its employees helped raise $2.7 million for T1D research.
