An 18-year-old was shot and killed Saturday morning near Main Street Market in Ridgeway, Virginia, in what investigators believe was a firearm transaction that turned violent. The shooting happened shortly before 11 a.m. in the 300 block of Main Street, and two people have since been taken into custody.
Deputies responded to the 310 Main Street address after the shooting was reported, according to WFXR. Investigators told WSET that the shooting appears to have stemmed from a firearm deal gone wrong, with two people meeting the victim and at least one of them believed to have fired the shot that killed him. The station reported that the incident was captured on video.
Investigators identified a vehicle believed to be connected to the shooting, which led them to detain a man and a juvenile male for questioning Saturday, per the same WSET report. WDBJ7 identified those two as 18-year-old Tyquel Zion Hampton and a 14-year-old juvenile, both taken into custody in connection with the killing. Reports differed on whether the sheriff's office had released the victim's identity by the time of publication — WFXR reported that investigators had not yet named him, while WDBJ7 identified him as 18-year-old Jaidyn Maki Manns, who the outlet said died from injuries sustained in the shooting.
Sheriff's Office Calls Case an Active Homicide Investigation
The sheriff's office said the case remains an active and ongoing homicide investigation, according to WDBJ7's reporting. Per WSLS, the Henry County Sheriff's Office said the incident posed no ongoing threat to the community, even as authorities continue the investigation.
Ridgeway Mayor Craig O'der Jr. said the incident involved four teenagers and an alleged robbery during a firearm transaction, WSLS reported. O'der also extended his condolences to those affected by the shooting.
Pattern of Gun Violence in Ridgeway
Saturday's shooting is the latest in a string of gun-violence incidents the Henry County Sheriff's Office has investigated in Ridgeway in recent months. In late September, deputies investigated a domestic-related shooting at a Sheetz convenience store in the same community, according to WSET. That case led to the arrest of 65-year-old Darryl Bernard Dandridge, who was charged with possession of a firearm by a violent convicted felon after the victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was released from the hospital; officials said there was no ongoing threat to the public in that incident.
In another Ridgeway case, deputies responded to reports of shots fired into an occupied home on Villa Road, where they found 29-year-old Marquise Antonio Waller with multiple gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to WFXR. In that case, 25-year-old Takai Anthony Brodie allegedly turned himself in shortly after the shooting and was arrested.
Hampton and the 14-year-old were each charged with second-degree murder and larceny of a firearm and held without bond as of Saturday. Authorities said the investigation into the Main Street Market shooting is continuing.
