A routine traffic stop on San Antonio's north side turned into a slow-rolling standoff Monday afternoon after a 90-year-old driver refused to pull over for a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper, leading officers on a pursuit down Loop 1604 before his car was finally stopped. The driver was alone in the vehicle and was taken into custody and charged with evading arrest or detention with a motor vehicle.
According to Yahoo News, the encounter began around 3:30 p.m. Monday when a DPS anti-gang trooper attempted to stop a gray car near Loop 1604 and Blanco Road for a traffic violation. Rather than stopping, the driver continued westbound on Loop 1604 as the trooper followed, according to the same report.
Pursuit Ends Near Bandera Road
The chase did not last long before troopers moved to end it. Officials say the pursuit concluded near Loop 1604 and Bandera Road, where troopers used their patrol vehicles to box in and stop the car, per the Yahoo News account. The driver was then taken into custody without further incident described in the report.
The report notes the driver was the only person inside the vehicle at the time. He now faces a charge of evading arrest or detention with a motor vehicle. The San Antonio Express-News reported that it had requested more information from Texas DPS about the pursuit and was still awaiting a response as of publication.
What Remains Unclear
Several details of the case have not been established in the reporting so far, including whether anyone was hurt or whether any vehicles were damaged during the pursuit. The case's status in court also has not been reported. For now, the known facts remain limited to the sequence of events along Loop 1604 and the single charge filed against the driver.
