A case was also reported in nearby Irvine. According to New Santa Ana, Irvine police asked for the public’s help identifying three suspects allegedly involved in a distraction-fraud scheme that began outside an Irvine Walmart in early September, a case that was later featured in the department’s Felony Friday series. In that incident, investigators alleged one suspect took a shopper’s debit card from their wallet after the shopper left the store, while two accomplices allegedly used the card to withdraw cash from an ATM in Tustin and to obtain additional funds through a bank teller transaction in Hacienda Heights, resulting in a reported total loss of nearly $4,000.
What the Law Says About Access Card Fraud
California law addresses this type of conduct under Penal Code section 484g, which covers using an access card or access-card account information with intent to defraud to obtain money, goods, services, or something else of value, according to California Legislative Information. The publicly available text of the statute is limited, and it does not provide a complete picture of how the law might apply to the Santa Ana case.
For now, the Santa Ana case remains open, with no suspects named and no arrests announced. Anyone who recognizes the man described in the department’s post, or who has information about the wallet incident near the Marshall’s entrance, is urged to reach out to investigators at the number above.
