A school bus and a pickup truck collided Tuesday morning in East Greenwich Township, Gloucester County, leaving the bus on its side near the intersection of Kings Highway and East Wolfert Station Road. Officials said the small school bus and the truck collided in a crash that caused the bus to overturn.
NBC10 Philadelphia reported seeing the damaged bus still at the roadside at about 8 a.m. Tuesday, resting on its side at the crash site along Kings Highway at East Wolfert Station Road, as NBC10 Philadelphia detailed in its report. The pickup truck involved in the crash had suffered extensive damage to the front of the vehicle, the station noted. The collision left the bus overturned.
Key Details Still Unknown
Several basic questions about the crash remained unanswered Tuesday morning. Officials did not immediately say whether anyone was injured, nor did they say whether any students were on the bus at the time, according to the same NBC10 account. It also was not immediately clear whether the school bus was in service when the collision happened, the station reported, and an investigation into the crash was still ongoing Tuesday morning.
The 6abc Philadelphia Action News team said it was looking into whether anyone had been hurt. Both the bus and the truck sustained significant damage in the collision, the station said.
Part of a Wider Pattern in Gloucester County
Tuesday's crash is not the first time a school bus has overturned or been seriously damaged in a collision in the region this year. In September, a school bus crash in nearby Monroe Township sent 14 people, including 12 children, to the hospital on just the third day of the school year, according to nj.com. Nine of those 12 children had been riding the bus itself, the outlet reported, while the other three children, along with two adults, were also taken for treatment.
A separate crash in Newtown Township also ended with a school bus on its side after it collided with another vehicle. In that incident, the bus was carrying four Paxon Hollow Middle School students, a school aide and a driver when it overturned at 7:40 a.m., Superintendent Tina Kane said, and the four students were taken to the hospital for evaluation of minor injuries, per NBC10's earlier reporting on that crash.
A Difficult Year for School Transportation Safety
The East Greenwich Township crash arrives amid a tougher stretch nationally for school transportation safety. School Transportation News tracked at least eight student fatalities tied to school transportation incidents during the 2025–2026 school year, including six pedestrian deaths in which students were struck by school buses, according to stnonline.com. The 2024–2025 school year was worse still, with the outlet reporting at least 18 student deaths tied to school transportation incidents, at least eight of them involving students struck and killed by a school bus.
No such outcome has been reported in Tuesday's East Greenwich Township crash. The investigation was ongoing Tuesday morning.
